Up In The Air
Delightful. A really delightful movie. It does kind of drag as it winds down, though. And what am I supposed to feel about the ending? While I can appreciate the lack of tidy bows before credits roll, I wouldn't have objected to a bit more clarity regarding what's going on in Clooney's head. Still, Rating: Movie Rental.

Daybreakers
Within the glut of vampires all drippy with teen angst, this movie stands out nicely. No one looking longingly across the room at anyone and no fancy-pantsy laced and pasty-faced prancers making me wish theatre seats had air-sickness bags in a pouch at the back of the seat ahead of me. Granted, the audience -- and I -- were actually laughing out loud at the climax of the movie (bad, bad choice to put it in slow motion, you silly filmmakers), but up until then it was pretty entertaining (if a bit gory), what with the action, and near misses, and suspenseful moments and Willem Dafoe. Verdict: Movie Rental

Sherlock Holmes
I rang in the New Year with Robert Downey Jr. (literally -- I went to a late showing because the TTC was running for free after midnight, so it only cost me a fare going to the theatre. My return trip was gratis, except for having to pay the price of avoiding the drunk who was throwing up in the recycling cart at the station ... she didn't even have the decency to chuck her up in the garbage receptacle next to it ...) You know, it was enjoyable, with lots of action and some funny, but it's not like the mystery bits of it were ever what kept you going. You knew anything that seems unexplainable has an explanation, and only appears mysterious so that Holmes can reveal the little man behind the curtain. That's kind of the point of the subject matter, right? (... and its not like at any time we suspected the baddie's is back from the dead because he's some kind of evil dark wizard master ... we didn't accidentally walk into Buffy the Vampire Slayer here.) Still ... fun. Verdict: Movie Rental
